About the role
We are seeking an experienced and highly skilled Transport Nurse (Registered
Nurse) to join our Transalpine service. This role is a critical part of
ensuring safe, timely, and effective transfer of patients between Te Nikau
Hospital, Canterbury/Waitaha hospitals, and other regional healthcare
facilities.
You will utilise your advanced nursing knowledge and clinical judgement to assess patient needs, provide safe care during transfer, and deliver professional support to patients and their whānau throughout the process. Working in close collaboration with St John, medical teams, coordinators, and ward staff, this role requires a high level of autonomy, professionalism, and clinical expertise.
When not undertaking patient transfers, you will also contribute to the wider system by supporting clinical areas within your scope of practice.
Key responsibilities
- Ensure the safe transfer and continuity of care for patients across hospital sites and facilities.
- Perform comprehensive nursing assessments, develop and evaluate care plans, and provide interventions as required.
- Work collaboratively with St John and other health professionals, ensuring seamless door-to-door service and expert handovers.
- Maintain confidentiality, dignity, and culturally safe care at all times, consistent with the Treaty of Waitangi and Health NZ Te Tai o Poutini policies.
- Document all observations, interventions and evaluations to required standards.
- Ensure transport equipment is safe, sterile, and compliant with protocols.
- Role model professional, ethical, and evidence-based practice, and escalate issues appropriately.
- Support continuous quality improvement, safe patient outcomes, and positive whānau experiences.
About you
You will be a confident and adaptable Registered Nurse with a strong background
in acute or emergency care, able to work both independently and as part of a
multidisciplinary team. Calm under pressure, you will have excellent
communication skills and the ability to respond effectively in complex and
rapidly changing situations.
Essential requirements:
- New Zealand Registered Nurse with a current Annual Practising Certificate.
- Minimum 2 years’ post-registration experience.
- PDRP portfolio (or working towards).
- Cultural competency training completed (or commitment to undertake).
- Full, clean NZ driver’s licence.
- Computer literacy (Microsoft Suite).
- Ability to work on-call as rostered.
- Clearance to work with children.
Desirable:
- Emergency, acute, rural ED, ICU/CCU or post-anaesthetic nursing experience.
- Triage and TNCC qualifications.
- Orthopaedic nursing experience.
- Demonstrated leadership and teaching skills.
- Motivated, flexible, multi-skilled, with a good sense of humour.
