The West Coast District Health Board (WCDHB) of New Zealand is actively recruiting for Rural Generalists (RG) with recognised advanced skills in Obstetrics or Anaesthetics to consider a move to this naturally beautiful part of the world.

The West Coast of New Zealand has a population of approximately 30,000 with Greymouth as its hospital base. The WCDHB is implementing a Rural Generalist model of care. Exciting times loom as the opening of its brand new approximately 60 bed hospital, Te Nikau, is anticipated for August 2020. Services include Primary Care, Emergency Department, Inpatient services, Surgical services with incumbent and visiting surgeons, Maternity services, Mental Health, in-house laboratory, Imaging Department including CT and Ultrasound, Pharmacy and Allied Health teams in support. 

The Women’s Health team is well supported by an incumbent O&G specialist, outreach FRANZCOG support from Christchurch and a great team of local midwives. Approximately 220 – 250 babies are born on the West Coast annually. Christchurch Women’s Hospital has given the WCDHB RG Obstetric model its support and is involved with ongoing upskilling and credentialing of the RG Obstetric fraternity.

Anaesthetic services has one incumbent FANZCA and one FRCA colleague and provides intrapartum analgesia and anaesthetics for the surgical and endoscopy services. The new hospital will have three “state of the art” operating theatres.

The WCDHB is specifically recruiting for experienced Rural Generalists with evidence of recent practice in procedural Obstetrics or Anaesthetics. Minimum qualifications must include either being a FACRRM or a /FARGP with advDRANZCOG (Obstetrics) or JCCA (Anaesthetics). The capability to work in Primary Care is a core value to this model & satisfactory references are a prerequisite.
