We are seeking either an experienced Phlebotomist – Pre-Analytical Technician or a motivated Trainee to join our Laboratory Services team. This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to the delivery of safe, accurate, and timely diagnostic services while providing exceptional care to patients and clients.

About the Role

As a Phlebotomist – Pre-Analytical Technician, you will be responsible for collecting blood samples from inpatients and outpatients, performing pre-analytical laboratory duties, and supporting the efficient operation of the laboratory.

Working within a quality-focused environment, you will ensure specimens are collected, processed, and managed according to laboratory protocols while maintaining a strong commitment to patient care, health and safety, and continuous improvement.

For Trainee applicants, comprehensive training and support will be provided while working towards registration requirements.

Key Responsibilities

Patient Care and Phlebotomy

  • Collect blood samples from inpatients and outpatients in accordance with laboratory protocols.
  • Provide a professional, compassionate, and patient-focused service.
  • Ensure patients and clients receive courteous, prompt, and respectful assistance.
  • Maintain patient confidentiality and privacy at all times.

Laboratory and Pre-Analytical Duties

  • Register patients and specimens accurately within laboratory information systems.
  • Perform specimen reception, processing, and pre-analytical tasks according to established procedures.
  • Ensure data entry, information retrieval, and reporting activities are accurate and timely.
  • Provide advice regarding specimen collection and laboratory requirements where appropriate.
  • Assist with laboratory maintenance, stock control, cleaning, and general housekeeping duties.

Quality and Safety

  • Adhere to laboratory quality assurance programmes, policies, and procedures.
  • Recognise and escalate quality issues or out-of-control processes.
  • Participate in quality improvement initiatives and quality review activities.
  • Follow all laboratory health and safety procedures and guidelines.
  • Report hazards, incidents, and unsafe practices promptly and appropriately.

Communication and Teamwork

  • Maintain positive working relationships with colleagues, patients, clinicians, and stakeholders.
  • Communicate operational or technical issues to the Technical Specialist, Section Head, or Laboratory Manager.
  • Participate in team meetings and contribute to a collaborative workplace culture.
  • Support continuous service improvement and high-quality patient outcomes.

Professional Development

  • Maintain and develop professional knowledge and skills.
  • Participate in education, training, and competency programmes.
  • Contribute to professional development activities and educational meetings.
  • For registered staff, maintain continuing professional development requirements and Annual Practising Certificate obligations.

Phlebotomist – Pre-Analytical Technician (Essential)

  • Registered with the relevant New Zealand Medical Sciences regulatory body and hold a current Annual Practising Certificate (APC).
  • Demonstrated phlebotomy and laboratory experience.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality.
  • Ability to work independently and manage competing priorities.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong customer service focus.
  • Commitment to teamwork and continuous improvement.
  • Understanding of the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and culturally safe practice.

Phlebotomist – Pre-Analytical Technician Trainee (Essential)

  • NCEA Level 2 or equivalent qualification.
  • Working towards Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) or Medical Laboratory Pre-Analytical Technician (ML-PAT) registration.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent organisational and time management abilities.
  • Ability to learn new skills and work accurately in a fast-paced environment.
  • Commitment to quality, confidentiality, and patient care.
  • Understanding of the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and culturally safe practice.

Desirable

  • Previous healthcare or laboratory experience.
  • Experience working directly with patients or the public.
  • Knowledge of laboratory information systems.
  • Understanding of quality assurance and health and safety processes.
