We are seeking a detail-focused, customer-centred Payroll Officer to join our People & Capability team. In this role, you will contribute to delivering an excellent employee experience while ensuring accurate and timely payroll services across the Canterbury and West Coast regions.

About the Role
The Payroll Officer is responsible for delivering high-quality payroll processing and exceptional customer service that supports both managers and employees. You will play a key role in ensuring accuracy, compliance, and efficiency across all payroll functions.
Key Responsibilities
- Process payroll tasks for Time & Attendance including coding manual time sheets and leave forms as per entitlements under the Holidays Act and various MECAs. Scanning, sorting and filing and printing of timesheets.
- Assist with workflow management from MAX system.
- Provide confidential, accurate and empathetic responses to employee payroll queries.
- Perform accurate data entry and ensure deadlines are consistently met.
- Investigate and resolve pay issues promptly and professionally.
- Provide accurate and timely information to WellNZ and ACC as required.
- Liaise with HR Shared Services teams to ensure smooth and timely pay runs.
- Check reports and meet audit requirements.
- Contribute to training, knowledge sharing, and supporting other team members.
- Maintain strong working relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
- Work collaboratively with other teams to ensure consistent processes and continuous improvement.
- Uphold confidentiality and adhere to organisational policies and procedures.
- Assist with other duties as required and agreed with your manager.
About You
Qualifications, Experience, and Skills
Essential:
- Proven payroll experience and knowledge of payroll legislation and processes.
- Strong understanding of the Holidays Act.
- Fast and accurate typing/data entry skills.
- Excellent attention to detail and accuracy.
- Strong Microsoft Office skills, especially Word and Excel.
- Experience providing high-quality customer service.
- Ability to handle confidential information with integrity.
- Ability to remain calm and professional under pressure.
- Strong communication and relationship-building skills.
- Solid organisational and time management abilities.
Desirable:
- Experience in the health sector or a related field.
- Experience working in a large, complex organisation.
- Familiarity with payroll or HR information systems.
