This role supports essential services across our district, ensuring our buildings, systems, and environments remain fit for purpose for patients, staff, and visitors.
About the Role
As a Trades Assistant, you will work as part of the Maintenance & Engineering Team, supporting technical staff and contributing to the overall performance, safety, and reliability of our health facilities. You will help carry out maintenance, repairs, inspections, and upgrades across a wide range of building services and essential plant systems.
This role is ideal for someone proactive, adaptable, practical, and eager to learn in a busy 24/7 healthcare environment.
Key Responsibilities
Team, Culture & Communication
- Support a collaborative, engaged Maintenance & Engineering team.
- Understand and contribute to the district’s goals, priorities, and service direction.
- Promote a strong, positive, and safety-first work culture.
- Maintain clear communication with colleagues, managers, and wider health services.
Maintenance & Repairs
- Assist with maintenance and repair of mechanical and electrical systems across HNZ sites.
- Support building services including HVAC, water systems, compressed air, medical gases, and reticulated systems.
- Perform building structure, fabric, and finishes maintenance as required.
- Keep facilities well maintained and functioning to a high standard.
- Provide backup for grounds maintenance, including lawns and spraying.
Inspections & Planned Work
- Conduct routine inspections, cleaning, and monitoring of plant rooms and systems.
- Assist with installation, upgrades, and replacement of building services and equipment.
- Follow Maintenance & Engineering Standards and Operational Procedures.
- Carry out Planned, Condition, and Defect maintenance tasks.
Safety & Compliance
- Adhere to Health & Safety policies at all times.
- Use PPE correctly and promote safe working practices.
- Ensure compliance with statutory and regulatory requirements.
- Requisition parts and materials when required.
- Participate in emergency response and on-call roster.

- Ability to identify maintenance issues through observation.
- Understanding of how maintenance work impacts patient services.
- Experience supporting a 24/7 operating environment.
- Flexibility and willingness to adapt quickly to changing tasks.
