About the Role
Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora Waitaha Canterbury is seeking a General Surgeon to join our team in either a fixed-term or locum capacity, providing high-quality surgical care across both Canterbury and the West Coast.
Based primarily at Christchurch Hospital, this role offers an exciting opportunity to work within one of New Zealand’s busiest tertiary surgical services while contributing to equitable access to surgical care across the South Island. You will provide acute and elective general surgical services within Canterbury and support regional service delivery on the West Coast through regular clinics, operating lists, endoscopy services, and clinical support.
In this role, you will participate in acute general surgery and on-call rosters, conduct outpatient clinics, operating lists and endoscopy services in Christchurch, and collaborate closely with multidisciplinary teams across both regions to support continuity of care and improve patient outcomes. Telehealth and virtual care are also utilised where appropriate to strengthen regional integration and patient access.

The General Surgery service at Christchurch Hospital is part of a large and dynamic tertiary service, delivering acute and elective surgical care to a diverse population across Canterbury and the South Island. The team works closely with regional colleagues on the West Coast to ensure equitable access to high-quality surgical services for rural communities.

About You
As a General Surgeon, you will bring:
- Fellowship training in General Surgery or equivalent advanced training
- Eligibility for vocational registration with the Medical Council of New Zealand
- Experience working effectively within multidisciplinary teams
- A strong patient-centred and equity-focused approach to care
- Commitment to service development, clinical excellence and continuous improvement
- Confidence working across tertiary and regional models of surgical service delivery
