General Practitioner | Westport

General Practitioner | Westport, West Coast

  • Make a genuine difference in a close-knit West Coast community
  • Enjoy broad, rewarding clinical practice with the support of an experienced healthcare team
  • Build a career and lifestyle surrounded by some of New Zealand’s most spectacular natural landscapes

Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora is firmly grounded in the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and is committed to building a health system that serves all New Zealanders.

Mō te tūnga | About the role

We are looking for a General Practitioner to join our team in Westport, on the spectacular West Coast of New Zealand’s South Island.

Working in a rural community offers something different. You will have the opportunity to develop strong relationships with your patients, work across a varied clinical caseload and see the genuine impact of the care you provide.

You will be part of a supportive, collaborative healthcare team providing high-quality care to the Buller community, with access to the wider clinical network and resources of Health New Zealand.

This is an opportunity for a GP who enjoys variety, values continuity of care and is looking for a role where they can make a meaningful contribution to the health and wellbeing of a community.

Why Westport?

Westport offers the kind of lifestyle that is increasingly difficult to find.

Set between the Tasman Sea and the Southern Alps, the Buller region is surrounded by rugged coastline, native rainforest, rivers and mountains. From surfing and mountain biking to hiking, fishing and exploring the nearby Paparoa National Park, outdoor adventure is never far away.

Just as importantly, Westport offers a welcoming community, shorter commutes and a relaxed pace of life – giving you more time to enjoy life outside of work.

Whether you are considering a permanent move to the Coast or looking for your next professional adventure in New Zealand, Westport offers the opportunity to combine rewarding medicine with an exceptional lifestyle.

Ko wai koe | About you

You will be a compassionate and adaptable GP who enjoys working collaboratively and building strong relationships with patients, whānau and colleagues.

You will:

  • Provide high-quality, patient-centred primary healthcare to the Westport community
  • Work collaboratively with nursing, allied health and medical colleagues
  • Support preventative care and the ongoing health and wellbeing of the local population
  • Bring a flexible and community-focused approach to rural healthcare

You will need to hold, or be eligible to obtain, registration with the Medical Council of New Zealand.

Ngā hua | Benefits

As an employee of Health New Zealand | Te Tai o Poutini West Coast, you will benefit from employment conditions under the Association of Salaried Medical Specialists (ASMS) collective agreement, including:

  • Competitive salary in accordance with the applicable ASMS salary scale
  • Six weeks’ annual leave
  • Study leave and Continuing Medical Education (CME) allowance
  • Rostered non-clinical time
  • Relocation support where applicable
  • Ongoing professional development and support

Nau mai, haere mai | Join us

If you are looking for a GP role where your contribution is valued, your clinical work is varied and life outside work is just as rewarding, we would love to hear from you.

Come and experience medicine with meaning – and life on the Coast.
