General & Upper Gastrointestinal/Hepatopancreatobiliary Surgery Fellow – Christchurch Hospital | Fixed Term Full-Time (12 Months)

About the Role

The Department of General Surgery at Christchurch Hospital is offering a 12-month Fellowship in General and UGI/HPB for surgeons seeking to further develop their clinical and operative experience following completion of advanced surgical training.

You will work alongside experienced consultants across a broad range of elective and acute surgical cases and participate in the acute surgical service on a rotational basis. The fellowship provides exposure to complex tertiary-level surgical care and the opportunity to contribute to a high-performing multidisciplinary team.

The role is expected to commence : February 2027

Christchurch Hospital is the largest tertiary hospital in the South Island and provides comprehensive specialist surgical services to the Canterbury region and beyond.

The General Surgery Department includes:

  • 27 General Surgeons
  • 4 Fellows / Medical Officers
  • 22 Registrars
  • 12 House Officers

Subspecialty areas include:

  • Upper Gastrointestinal Surgery
  • Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary (HPB) Surgery
  • Lower Gastrointestinal Surgery
  • Oncoplastic Breast and Endocrine Surgery

The department is supported by dedicated inpatient wards, specialist nursing staff, and a comprehensive range of allied health services.

About you

You will be a motivated surgeon seeking to further develop your expertise in a tertiary surgical service.

You will also have:

  • Eligibility for General Registration with the Medical Council of New Zealand
  • Completion of FRACS Part II or an equivalent recognised surgical qualification
  • A strong clinical interest in General and Upper GI Surgery
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills
  • Commitment to delivering high-quality patient care
